Save Graythwaite

The Greens are campaigning with the local community to protect the heritage values of the Graythwaite site in North Sydney by keeping it in public hands.

In late 2009 the Greens moved to bring in legislation, the Save the Graythwaite Estate Bill,  to maintain the Graythwaite estate in public hands and to stop the NSW government's proposed sell off to the private school Shore for $35.2 million. This passed the NSW Upper House and was then introduced into the NSW Lower House where it was defeated.

The Greens campaign is based on the Greens' successful bill to Save Callan Park in 2002.

The Greens private members bill was designed to provide the legal protection necessary to preserve Graythwaite for future generations and honour the intention of the original owners who had a long term commitment to rehabilitation.

However, the fight to save Graythwaite estate is certainly not over. There is a CFMEU Green Ban on the site and the Friends of Graythwaite and the local community are continuing the battle.

Once again we will make every effort to maintain this glorious estate in public hands where it belongs.
